Wildland fire officials are on alert with a second wave of above normal temperatures expected later this week.  Several fires caught people off guard last week after a number of days of unseasonably warm weather.  Reports of wildfire activity are coming in from around the state as a sign that fire season may not be too far off.  While firefighters in Jackson and Josephine counties snuffed out several small fires last week, a 25-acre fire tested fire crews Friday east of Alsea, about 15 miles southwest of Corvallis.

The City of Astoria Historic Landmarks Commission has selected the 2013 recipients for the Dr. Edward Harvey Historic Preservation Award.  The award is presented each year to recognize property owners who have completed exterior restoration or beautification of a building which exemplifies the historical attributes of the building or the architectural heritage of Astoria.

Oregon Land Use Board Of Appeals has sided with a Clatsop County group that opposes the construction of a Walmart Super Store in the Warenton Business Park.  Warrenton City Commissioner Henry Balensifer reports that the decision means Walmart will have to go through the planning and permitting process again after making significant changes to the plan for the store if they intend to contnue.

The Clatsop County Board of Commissioners on April 24 approved the second step of a two-phase initiative to make the county's facilities smoking- and tobacco-free – which a spokesman says will help make the county a healthier place for all residents.

Clatsop County's proposed budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year continues a pattern of belt-tightening to maintain county services with limited resources.  The proposed budget eliminates four positions and limits spending in other areas to account for flat property tax revenue collections, lower state and federal funding levels, and increased costs outside the county's control such as Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) obligations.

A construction flagger was seriously injured in a Monday morning crash on Highway 101 about five miles south of Warrenton.  Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Astoria Area Command are continuing the investigation.

The Coast Guard came to the assistance of two fishing vessels, helping to save a total catch of 35 tons of shrimp from spoiling. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received distress calls from the crews of the fishing vessels Granada and Cap Elza near Tillamook Bay, Ore., and Depoe Bay, Ore., respectively.  Both crews reported their vessels had become disabled with a large catch of shrimp aboard.
