Youth Football Camp Scheduled for August 5th - 8th
The Astoria High School Football Coaching Staff will be conducting a four-day football camp for any students entering the Kindergarten through 8th Grades for this upcoming 2013 – 2014 school year. Camp times are 5:30-7:00 P.M. each night with registration beginning at 5:00 P.M. The camp location is JOHN WARREN STADIUM / GYRO FIELD.
Cost is $30.00 per individual or $50.00 per family. Camp fee includes a t-shirt and free admission to the AHS Football Conditioning Camp the following week.
Tuesday is opening day of the Clatsop County Fair. Gates open at 10:00 a.m. and the fair is expected to remain open until 9:00 p.m.. This year Eagle Country 103.9 FM is offering two chances to win passes to the 2013 Oregon Jamboree. You can find all the information on that here.
Authorities are trying to determine the cause of a weekend fire that burned two recreational vehicles on the Oregon coast, killing a woman and two dogs. The Oregonian reports that state troopers say 52-year-old Patricia Eilene Howell was found dead Saturday, along with one dog, inside an RV on property near Florence. A second dog's body was found in a second RV that burned nearby. Police say all three died of fire-related injuries. Howell lived on the property with the dogs.
For over a decade, the Lunch Buddy Mentoring Program has been providing Clatsop County elementary age students with backpacks and a starter set of school supplies to help students and their families get off to a great start to the school year. The costs of that effort have gone up over the years, but the need continues. This year the program is hoping to provide every student in kindergarten through second grade with access to a new backpack and some of the basic needed school supplies.
A Forest Grove couple was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when their motorcycle and crashed along Highway 20 about three miles west of the Santiam Pass summit. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.
On July 28, 2013 at approximately 4:30 p.m., a 2004 Yamaha motorcycle operated by Rickie Ray Taylor, age 61, from Forest Grove, was westbound on a downhill grade of Highway 20 near milepost 78 negotiating a left curve. The motorcycle traveled onto the right shoulder and sideswiped a guardrail and then laid onto its side, sliding until it came to rest off the highway.
The Clatsop County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution urging the Oregon Department of Forestry to preserve a 152-foot tall Western red cedar as a state treasure.
The tree is estimated to be more than 800 years old. It grows on a 286-acre parcel of state land near Cannon Beach.
During the week of July 29, 2013 the Astoria Police Department will be conducting a focused Pedestrian Safety Enforcement in Astoria. During this focused enforcement the officers involved will be stopping and contacting drivers who are violating Oregon's vehicle and pedestrian safety laws. Though officers involved in this enforcement effort will be focused on the pedestrian laws, they will also be contacting drivers who commit other traffic violations.
A public health advisory was issued today due to higher-than-normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at Short Sand Beach , also known as "Smugglers Cove" a popular surfing spot at Oswald West State Park.
Famed country singer/songwriter Phil Vassar will give a concert in Astoria on Labor Day. All proceeds will benefit the Columbia Memorial Hospital Foundation's Cancer Care Phase 2 project, which will support CMH's plans to expand its oncology facilities and services.
The Board of Directors of Clatsop Community College elected its new officers for 2013-2014 at its regular board meeting, July 9, 2013. The Board continues to demonstrate its commitment to rotating leadership broadly among the members.
Astoria will host a commemoration in October to mark the 100-year anniversary of the founding of the Indian nationalist Ghadar Party. The political movement, driven by Asian Indians of the U.S. West Coast who wished to free India from British rule, was born during a meeting in Astoria's local Finnish Socialist Hall in May 1913.
