Interim County Manager Rich Mays announced that Robin Koch has been hired as Clatsop County’s new Human Resources Director.
More than 90 Citizen-Airmen from the Oregon Air National Guard's 116th Air Control Squadron (ACS) were welcomed home in a formal demobilization ceremony at Camp Withycombe, in Clackamas, Oregon, Jan. 22.
The 116th ACS, based at Camp Rilea, in Warrenton, Oregon, is a deployable air control and radar/communications unit. Members of the 116th ACS deployed to Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates from May to November 2015.
Sunset Empire Transportation District has announced that the last day for bus services to the Senior Center at the Yacht Club will be January 22, 2016. This temporary bus service was being provided because the Senior Center had temporarily been located at the Yacht Club building during the remodel of the actual Senior Center building located at 1111 Exchange Street in Astoria. The Senior Center is moving back to the newly remodeled Senior Center at 1111 Exchange and which will open on Monday January 25th.

Coast Guard crews rescued a 55-year-old male who had been clinging to his overturned kayak for three and a half hours in Baker Bay east of Ilwaco, Sunday. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria in Warrenton, Oregon, hoisted the kayaker after spotting him in the bay around 8 p.m. and safely transferred him in good condition to waiting emergency medical service personnel at the air station.
The Port of Astoria Commission meets Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM.Commissioners will consider a request for proposals to redevelop the Chinook building and/or the long closed Seafarer Restaurant at the west end basin. The proposed RFP is designed to allow a potential developer to make a proposal to take on one of the properties or both to get them back up and operating.

On January 9, 2016 at 10:35am the Warrenton Police Department was dispatched to the parking lot of Fred Meyers in reference to a disturbance by the grocery entrance. Responding officers were soon advised a suspect attempted to steal a woman’s purse and possibly a vehicle. Officer Wirt arrived and learned that the 72-year old victim was loading groceries into her car when the suspect took the victim’s purse from her shopping cart and ran to a parked 2011 Hyundai. The victim was knocked to the ground and suffered minor injuries. As this was happening a witness pulled his 2004 Lexus SUV behind the suspect’s vehicle to prevent his escape. The suspect rammed the witness’s vehicle twice before fleeing the vehicle and running away.
Clatsop County lawyer Dawn McIntosh has filed for election for Circuit Court Judge, Position 2 of the 18th Judicial District, the position currently held by Judge Philip Nelson. Judge Nelson will retire in 2016. The election will be held on May, 17 2016.
