Improving pedestrian safety in the city of Astoria has been a hot topic for some months now with City Public Works and the Oregon Department of Transportation working to improve traffic and pedestrian safety throughout the city with some of those improvements planned to be in place by next month.

Lincoln City's Chinook Winds Casino will play host this week to a coastal economic summit announced by U.S. Senator Ron Wyden's office today.  Wyden will join with State Senator Betsy Johnson to discuss economic issues important to the coast of Oregon according to a news release. There will also be a public question and answer period.  The event is set for Wednesday, August 31st at 12:30pm

A meeting of the Forest Trust Land Advisory Committee (FTLAC) originally scheduled for Aug. 23 in Salem has been canceled. The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) said the difficult wildfire season necessitated the cancelation, since nearly all employees are directly or indirectly supporting fire suppression efforts.

The council plans to spend a half hour talking about the recent trip that sent the entire city council to visit sister city Waldorf, Germany.  At the last council meeting August 5th the Mayor indicated that the public would be invited to ask questions about the trip.

On August 15, 2013 at about 7:00 PM Astoria Regional Dispatch broadcast an attempt to locate for a stolen car traveling from the Clatskanie area. Officer Tim Gillum was on patrol and watching for the car. At 8:00 PM he saw the vehicle entering Astoria on Highway 30. He radioed Sergeant Aydt who was also working and together they conducted a high risk traffic stop at 36th and Lief Erickson Drive. The driver, Shannon Leigh Kelly, age 44 of Astoria, was arrested. A 47 year old male passenger was detained then released at the scene when officers determined he was getting a ride but had no knowledge that the vehicle was stolen.

A public health advisory for contact with marine water at Short Sand Beach in Tillamook County was lifted today by the Oregon Health Authority. The advisory was issued Aug. 13 after water samples showed higher-than-normal levels of fecal bacteria.

Sunset Empire Transportation District announces several route and schedule changes that will begin on August 18, 2013. The week day Route 30 and weekend Columbia Connector route have been combined to form a new Columbia Connector Route.

The board gave consent to funding the county's share of the 2014 budget of the Council of Forest Trust Land Counties, including a $12,000 special assessment earmarked for legal expenses related to a federal lawsuit over habitat protection in the state forests.

On August 13, 2013 Astoria Regional Dispach Center received a call of a hit and run that occured near 7th and Olney. The victim of the hit and run had been stopped at the stop sign waiting for traffic to clear when she was struck from the rear by the suspect, later idetnified as Joshua Beelar, age 35 of Astoria) was following the suspect.

Police responded to an address in Hammond Tuesday shortly after 2:00pm where a man was said to have barricaded himself in a house with a gun.  Warrenton Police Chief Matthew Workman informed KAST News that the house had numerous firearms inside.  Authorities originally called to the scene after a call from the Parole and Probation office about a possible parole violation.

30-year-old Michell Simonsen was arrested after peacefully surrendering Tuesday afternoon.  Simonsen told police he did not want to go to jail on an empty stomach and wanted time to finish his pizza.  Simonsen spent over an hour inside the house as polcie waited at a standstill surrounding the house.
