Coast Guard Sector Columbia River crews responded to three suspected hoax distress calls near Clatskanie, Ore., and Portland, Ore.,Sunday.  Sector Columbia River launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria and a 25-foot response boat crew from Station Portland in response to the calls, searching for more than four hours and costing taxpayers an estimated $8,000.

A small beach bonfire is fun, but people who burn pallets or construction lumber instead of natural wood leave dangerous litter hidden in the sand. Pallets are held together with nails or staples, and even people who drown the remains of their fire leave sharp, rusty debris behind that can injure the next visitor for months or years afterward.

The City of Astoria got a snapshot on pedestrian safety Wednesday when the police conducted what they call a 'Focused Enforcement" action stopping drivers who failed to follow the rules at three different intersections through town.  Officers watched intersections where they have gotten complaints from the public in the past as vehicles failed to yield to pedestrians and made 34 traffic stops in a three hour period as a result.

Clatsop County Manager Scott Somers announces the hiring of Brian Mahoney as the county's Public Health Director. He joins the county Sept. 3.

"I'm excited for the opportunity," Mahoney said. "The challenges of the position were what I was looking for."

Mahoney currently works as public health emergency preparedness liaison in the Oregon Health Authority's Public Health Division, where he has served since 2002. His positions have included Strategic National Stockpile coordinator, health systems preparedness unit manager and public health preparedness planner. He has worked at the agency's Astoria office since 2010.

Youth Football Camp Scheduled for August 5th - 8th

The Astoria High School Football Coaching Staff will be conducting a four-day football camp for any students entering the Kindergarten through 8th Grades for this upcoming 2013 – 2014 school year.  Camp times are 5:30-7:00 P.M. each night with registration beginning at 5:00 P.M.  The camp location is JOHN WARREN STADIUM / GYRO FIELD.

Cost is $30.00 per individual or $50.00 per family.  Camp fee includes a t-shirt and free admission to the AHS Football Conditioning Camp the following week.

Tuesday is opening day of the Clatsop County Fair.  Gates open at 10:00 a.m. and the fair is expected to remain open until 9:00 p.m..  This year Eagle Country 103.9 FM is offering two chances to win passes to the 2013 Oregon Jamboree.  You can find all the information on that here.

Authorities are trying to determine the cause of a weekend fire that burned two recreational vehicles on the Oregon coast, killing a woman and two dogs.  The Oregonian reports that state troopers say 52-year-old Patricia Eilene Howell was found dead Saturday, along with one dog, inside an RV on property near Florence. A second dog's body was found in a second RV that burned nearby. Police say all three died of fire-related injuries.  Howell lived on the property with the dogs.

A Forest Grove couple was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when their motorcycle and crashed along Highway 20 about three miles west of the Santiam Pass summit. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.

On July 28, 2013 at approximately 4:30 p.m., a 2004 Yamaha motorcycle operated by Rickie Ray Taylor, age 61, from Forest Grove, was westbound on a downhill grade of Highway 20 near milepost 78 negotiating a left curve. The motorcycle traveled onto the right shoulder and sideswiped a guardrail and then laid onto its side, sliding until it came to rest off the highway.

For over a decade, the Lunch Buddy Mentoring Program has been providing Clatsop County elementary age students with backpacks and a starter set of school supplies to help students and their families get off to a great start to the school year. The costs of that effort have gone up over the years, but the need continues. This year the program is hoping to provide every student in kindergarten through second grade with access to a new backpack and some of the basic needed school supplies.

The Clatsop County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution urging the Oregon Department of Forestry to preserve a 152-foot tall Western red cedar as a state treasure.

The tree is estimated to be more than 800 years old. It grows on a 286-acre parcel of state land near Cannon Beach.
