Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into a serious injury pedestrian-involved traffic crash that occurred Thursday afternoon on Highway 101 about four miles north of Gearhart in Clatsop County.
No need to dress up and you don't need special gear and you won't have to move mountains to find a hike (although you can hike to the summit of Neah-kah-nie Mountain near Oswald West). This is the third year that OPRD has participated in First Day Hikes, a nationwide initiative sponsored by America's State Parks (www.americasstateparks.org) to encourage people to enjoy the outdoors and celebrate the New Year by getting out for a walk in a state park. Last year, more than 420 people participated in First Day Hikes in Oregon.
The State Employment Department reported Monday morning that the Clatsop County unemployment rate is down to 6.3%. That compares to 7.5% the year before and is below the current statewide rate of 7.3% and below the national rate now pegged at 7%.
The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Alert, a 210-foot medium endurance cutter, returned to their homeport of Astoria following an 81-day deployment,Friday. The cutter and crew covered more than 12,000 miles during their deployment that included a counter drug enforcement patrol in the Eastern Pacific and a rigorous training assessment by the Afloat Training Group in Everett, Wash.
On Friday Astoria Police reports they participated in a multi agency minor decoy operation in which a minor tries to buy booze from targeted businesses. Astoria's State Licensed liquor store was one of six businesses that sold alcohol to the minor.
Friday, Oregon U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley introduced legislation to ensure that Oregonians who try to sign up for health insurance through Cover Oregon can get coverage for the full month of January and any subsidy they are eligible for even if their information is not processed until later in the month.
Authorities now know what killed six elk that were found dead with no obvious wounds Dec. 13 in the Ocean View Cemetery at Warrenton.
They were poisoned.
Oregon State Police say four adults and two children were injured and State Highway 30 was temporarily closed about 10 miles east of Astoria after a head-on crash.
