State Representative Deborah Boone reports that several of her bills are progressing through the Oregon House this session. HB 2182, which would designate September 27th as the First Responder Appreciation Day, received unanimous support on the House Floor, and is now on the Senate side
State representative Bill Witt reports that his Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee saw a great deal of participation at hearings last week largely because the subject matter dealing with genetically engineered (GE) salmon is both timely and controversial. Witt says Four bills have been introduced: HB 2175, HB2532, HB 3177 and HB 2530, one of which pertains to genetically modified foods in general, but the other three focus on how this practice might affect the salmon industry in Oregon.
Oregon's Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement after the Senate passed his amendment to create a deficit-neutral reserve fund to facilitate the criminal prosecution of U.S. financial institutions that break the law, regardless of size.
More debris that may have come from the Japanese tsunami has been reported at Oceanside Beach. The object was discovered by a local man out for a walk on the beach Friday.
Beginning on April 1, U.S. 30 eastbound in Astoria between 8th and 9th Streets will be closed to all traffic for reconstruction of the 8th Street and Commercial Street intersection which includes replacing all utilities (sewer, water and storm) and installing reinforced concrete. The estimated completion date for this work is April 22.

Last year Astoria made the list as one of Ameria's "Coolest" small towns and this year Smithsonian.com picked Astoria as one of the top 20 towns that are a must see for 2013. The on line magazine talked of the town history and landmarks like the Flavel House and the Liberty Theater:

A prank on an intoxicated 15 year-old backfired at an underage drinking party and led to thirty-eight (38) minors being cited for Minor in Possession of Liquor. Officers responded to a report of a young girl trapped in a bathroom with a black eye in the 1200 block of S. Columbia. Officers arrived to find an underage drinking party and the female who was intoxicated did not have a black eye and had been locked in a closet as a prank.

An 18-foot fishing boat with Asian characters on its side washed ashore in Long Beach, Washington Friday. Scientists have taken samples from the boat to determine if any are invasive species. Mussels and gooseneck barnacles were found attached to the vessel. It's reported that some live fish were found in the fish well in the stern of the boat.
