U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliarist and former Executive Director of the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Jerry Ostermiller was awarded The Auxiliary Commendation Medal for outstanding achievement while serving as the Sector Columbia River Auxiliary Coordinator, Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.
A high wind warning and a high surf warning remain in effect into early Monday afternoon as a strong winter storm hit the coast Sunday evening and into Monday, delivering strong winds, towering waves and rain to some places and heavy snowfall and whiteout conditions to others.
The storm's effects won't be limited to the coast and the mountains. Forecasters also have posted high-wind warnings with gusts up to 55 mph in Oregon's Willamette Valley and the metro Portland area.

While officers were arresting Orion Adamson, a 37 year old Astoria area transient, for his role in this mornings stolen car, Officer Ryan Sisley was taking a Burglary report in the 500 block of Florence. The apartment had been entered through a sliding glass door with a broken lock. Taken were a computer, credit cards, checks and keys to both a Ford truck and a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. The Harley Davidson motorcycle was also missing but found a short distance away on Taylor Street. During the investigation Adamson was developed as a suspect. When booked at the Clatsop County Jail on the earlier offenses, officers located keys to a Ford Pickup and the Harley Davidson which had been taken from the victims residence. Previous story.
An official with knowledge of Friday's shooting at a U.S. school said 27 people were dead, including 18 children. It was the worst school shooting in the country's history. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is under way.
Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity for the same reason, said the gunman was among the dead. The White House said President Barack Obama had been notified. The killings happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) northeast of New York City.
Astoria Police Recover Stolen Vehicle; Vehicle found 7 Minutes After Report
At 6:59am Friday Morning Astoria Police were notified by the owner of a 1993 Ford Explorer that his vehicle had been stolen from the area of 828 Franklin. He reported that the vehicle had been stolen about an hour prior. Seven minutes later, at 7:06 Officer Matt Clausen saw a vehicle that matched the description.
