The Department of Energy has awarded $4 million to a Seattle company for a wind power demonstration project off Coos Bay.

Clatsop County is seeking applicants for representatives on the Columbia-Pacific Economic Development District Board of Directors. Col-Pac provides its government members and small businesses access to various development services and resources from federal, state and local agencies and private sources. The district covers Clatsop, Columbia, Tillamook and western Washington counties.
A suburban Portland mall remains closed while crime scene experts detail the shooting that left three people dead and one wounded and sent Santa and thousands of shoppers running. Clackamas County sheriff's Sgt. Adam Phillips says the shooter was a man in his 20s who apparently fired at random before taking his own life at the Clackamas Town Center. Police say there's no known connection between the gunman and the man and woman who were killed and the young woman who was wounded in a Portland-area mall. The victims are identified as Cindy Ann Yuille, age 54, a resident of northeast Portland and Steven Mathew Forsyth, age 45, of West Linn. The third victim -- Kristina Shevchenko, a juvenile -- survived the attack and is now being treated for her injuries at OHSU's trauma center.
The Oregon Department of Human Services latest report on elder abuse carries few surprises but does list the top two forms of abuse and financial abuse is number one. The report is a compliation of data taken from cases reported last year and indicates for those elderly who choose to stay in their own home instead of a licenced care center that they should guard against their own friends and family or suffer from financial abuse seeing years of savings and pension benefits ending up in someone else's pockets.

For the next three nights members of the Astoria Fire Department will be driving through neigborhoods in town in decorated fire trucks looking for canned food donations. The annual food drive is literally a drive with trucked decorated with Christmas lights and playing holiday tunes as members of the department gather non-perishable food items from the public. The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will take public comment on a proposed plan to eliminate commercial gillnet fishing for salmonin the main channel of the Columbia and make further restrictions on sturgeon fisheries on the lower Columbia River at a meeting Dec. 14-15 in Olympia.
