Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire which occurred on October 8, 1871. On the 40th anniversary (1911) of the Great Chicago Fire the first National Fire Prevention Day was celebrated as a way to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew's training mission near Depoe Bay on Sept. 12 was disrupted when a green laser lit up the cockpit. Green and red lasers pose a significant hazard to flight and boatcrews, especially when the helicopter crews are operating at low altitude at night or the boatcrews are battling treacherous conditions.

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 367,000, a level consistent with modest hiring trends.
The Labor Department says new applications rose by 4,000 from the previous week's level of 363,000. The previous week was revised higher from an initial reading of 359,000. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, was unchanged at 375,000.

The company planning a wave energy installation off Reedsport won't have its first buoy in the water this year as planned. Ocean Power Technologies says it managed to put one of three anchors in place, but the remaining two anchors will spend the winter in Reedsport while the power generation buoy is stored in Portland.
The Washington state Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that the state's existing hazardous substances tax, which was approved by voters in 1988, is constitutional.
