Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Lewis and Clark Elementary School Tuesday morning on report of a male walking towards the school with a rifle. The male, who was identified as Scott Wintermute, 31 years of the Lewis and Clark community was contacted on the logging road that runs behind the school. Wintermute was walking in on an early morning deer hunt.
The firearms and Wintermute were run through law enforcement databases and everything was in order. Wintermute was advised in the current climate of the concerns related to weapons near schools. Astoria Police and Oregon State Police responded to assist on the call. Lewis and Clark School was in lock down for a short period until the incident was determined to not be a threat.
