Astoria Police were dispatched to the area of 6th and Olney early Tuesday morning for a report of a gunshot in the area. Upon arrival officers located a Nissan truck near 6th and Olney. In the bed of the truck was a dead buck deer.
Officers were approached by a male subject identified as 19 year old James Lee Ogier of Astoria. Ogier had blood on his hands and initially claimed he had struck the deer with his vehicle, however it was later determined that Ogier shot the deer
, gutted it and loaded it into his vehicle. Officers noted that the backdrop for the gunshot was the nearby Bayshore Apartments, and that Ogier appeared to be intoxicated. Ogier was arrested for charges of DUII, Reckless Endangering and Unlawful Use of a Firearm.
“Intoxicated driving and the use of a firearm inside the city limits are not only illegal, they are a recipe for tragedy. Fortunately, except for the deer, no one else was harmed as a result of this incident, but the potential was great”, said Astoria Deputy Police Chief Eric Halverson. Astoria Police were assisted at the scene by an Oregon State Police Game Trooper and the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office. Additional charges are expected, related to the illegal taking of the animal which was seized by Oregon State Police. The animal will be donated to the local food bank by the Oregon State Police.
