A Multnomah County Grand Jury issued an indictment today for 28-year-old Joshua Howard for Murder, Murder by Abuse and Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree. Thursday March 6, 2014, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the 2-year-old boy critically injured on Tuesday night at the Unicorn Motel passed away at a Portland hospital. This investigation started on Tuesday March 4, 2014, at 9:36 p.m., when East Precinct officers responded to the Unicorn Motel, located at 3040 Southeast 82nd Avenue, on the report of a 2-year-old male unconscious.
Officers arrived and noticed suspicious injuries on the child. One officer performed life-saving CPR until medical personnel arrived and continued life saving measures until the child arrived at a Portland hospital. The suspect, Joshua Howard, formerly of Astoria, Oregon, was in the room and called 9-1-1. Howard is the boyfriend of the child's mother. Based on the suspicious circumstances, detectives from the Family Services Division and the Homicide Detail were called to the scene to conduct an investigation. Detectives arrested Howard for Assault in the First Degree and booked him into the Multnomah County Jail early Wednesday morning.
