The 3rd Annual Harvest Haul foodraiser hit record numbers this year exceeding expections for both food and cash donations to help feed the hungry on the Long Beach Peninsula. OMG Radio's Nicki Whittle organizes the event each year and reports a total of 3,173 pounds of food was collected at sponsoring locations along with $2,427.15 in cash. All proceeds benefit the programs at the Ilwaco and Ocean Park food banks. Whittle had set her sights on raising about 2000 pounds of food and $2,000 in cash and enlisted the help of Great Northwest Federal Credit Union and Okies Thriftway Market to help spred the word. Several area businesses stepped up to provide drop-off locations and the cash donations were helped along by a large gift from car dealer Vince Williams.
Elementary school students in Long Beach and Ocean Park were big contributors with 60% of the total food raised for the Ilwaco food bank and 40% of the food raised for the Ocean Park food bank coming from the efforts of those Peninsula school children and their parents.
An excited and appreciative Whittle told supporters today she was honored to contribute to the effort along with the people at the food banks whom she described as " A phenomenal bunch of volunteers who give ALL year long".
