The city of Astoria is starting something new after questions arose about the funding used recently to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the founding of the India Ghadar party in Astoria.  The event was paid through the "Promote Astoria Fund" which gets it's funding from hotel/motel taxes collected from tourists who fill Astorias hotels and motels through the year.  Some members of the public came forward and asked if those funds are available for other purposes such as funding arts projects.  They also asked how to apply.  At the time there was nothing in place to ask for a grant but now that has changed.

The Astoria City Council has created a new Arts and Cultural Fund to Promote Tourism.  The Fund will be used to award grants to qualified non-profit organizations for art and culture oriented projects and events that benefit the community and promote tourism.  On Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at 6:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers, 2nd Floor of Astoria City Hall, 1095 Duane Street, the City will host an informational meeting.  A total of $30,000 has been budgeted for this year.  The City will be accepting grant applications through December 15, 2013 from qualified organizations for events occurring prior to June 30, 2014.  The meeting will be an opportunity to learn about the program and have questions answered.
