For those who live in Warrenton, or south county's School District 10 the deadline to register as a new voter is coming up Tuesday. The November 8 Special Election is a small one on terms of issues to decide, but a big one in terms of the items up for consideration.
There are no offices up for this election and only two ballot measures. One for Warrenton is a renewal for a local option levy for the city police department which the city says is critical to maintain patrols in the town. It funds one fulltime officer and makes up part of the salary of another. The big money issue up for consideration is for the residents of Arch Cape, Cannon Beach, Gearhart, Hamlet, Necanicum, Seaside and Stanley Acres who are included in Administrative School District #10. The district is proposing to build a new "Super School" campus for all K-12 students that will replace all the aging district facilities, consolidate staff in one locationand, provide emergency shelter in case of Tsunami, or other disasters. The price tage? $128, 800,000.00. The nearly $129 million dollars works out to $2.16 per $1000 of assessed valuation on property throughout the district. Superintendent Doug Dougherty told KAST news that the proposed 31 year bond will never be cheaper in terms of percentage rate with bond interest at historic lows.
