A detective in Seaside alleges in a $1 million federal lawsuit that the Clatsop County district attorney damaged his ability to work as an investigator in retaliation for his political activities.
The detective is Steve Barnett, who says Josh Marquis and his chief deputy, Ron Brown, refused to work with him because of untruthful claims that he lacked credibility as a witness.
Barnett said that was in retaliation for his questioning the need for a jail expansion measure that Marquis backed in a 2012 election and for running for county sheriff against incumbent Tom Bergin, whom Marquis endorsed. Bergin won. Voters rejected the jail measure.
Marquis said ethical considerations prevent him from responding to the allegations out of court.
