With local sports fishermen steaming over a big jump in daily parking rates at it's marinas, the Port of Astoria Commission has called a special meeting for Monday night at 6:00pm to discuss the parking plan for Port properties.
Some local fishermen say that the commission bumped daily parking rates from $5 a day to $20 a day in retaliation against sport fishermen after the states of Oregon and Washington agreed to phase out commercial gillnetting on the main stem Columbia River by 2017. Those fishermen who have contacted KAST News point out that Port Commissioner Bill Hunsinger has close ties to commercial fishermen and they say they find it suspicious that a local fish processor has stepped forward to help collect those parking fees. Critics of the parking fees say this will cost the city of Astoria and surrounding communities much needed revenue if sports fishermen follow through on a movement to ban spending dollars within the city.
The commission is set to meet this evening at 6:00pm at the old Port Office Building conference room.
