The Astoria City Council learned that Suenn Ho, a principal designer who has been working with the city on the Garden Of Surging Waves for several years has lost her job with the firm Mulvanny G2. City Manager Paul Benoit told the council that both Suenn Ho and her husband were laid off by the firm last week and the city has taken steps to communicate just how valuable her assistance on the garden project continues to be. Community Development Director Brett Estes told the council that Mulvanney G2 had told him that the lay-offs occured because business has been slow for the company but that Ho would be working as an independent contractor on the Astoria project. The Garden of Surging Waves is at a critical time in it's construction with several decisions still to be made about artisans work which requires Suenn Ho to help make the right choices.
Meanwhile, the garden project continues on track with the installation of the "dragon" columns to be completed this week and the design timbers that will become part of the structures planned for the garden are being fabricated this week.
All the funds necessary for the construction of the interpretive garden have been committed including a large donation from Arlene Schnitzer in the amount of $250,000 that was pledged at a very successful fundraising event sponsored by Astoria Mayor Van Dusen at the Schnitzer home in Portland in April. That event raised over $437,000 for the completion of the garden.
