Clatsop County Manager Scott Somers announces the hiring of Brian Mahoney as the county's Public Health Director. He joins the county Sept. 3.
"I'm excited for the opportunity," Mahoney said. "The challenges of the position were what I was looking for."
Mahoney currently works as public health emergency preparedness liaison in the Oregon Health Authority's Public Health Division, where he has served since 2002. His positions have included Strategic National Stockpile coordinator, health systems preparedness unit manager and public health preparedness planner. He has worked at the agency's Astoria office since 2010.
From 1987 to 2002 Mahoney worked for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in both Atlanta, Ga. and Geneva, Switzerland in such positions as public health advisor and disease intervention specialist.
Mahoney has a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education from Portland State University and Master of Public Health degree from Emory University in Atlanta.
He replaces Margo Lalich, who stepped down as director in May. His annual salary will be $85,095.
During his tenure with the Oregon Health Authority, Mahoney has designed and carried out large-scale statewide health exercises, provided preparedness technical assistance to county health departments, overseen logistics and planning for the state's response to the 2009 "swine" flu outbreak. He has also led the state's involvement in the Strategic National Stockpile Program, designed to provide emergency vaccines and medications to the entire population within 48 hours.
