The City budget comes first tonight with a meeting of the budget committee at 7pm with the City Council Meeting to follow. The Budget Committee will consider a new tourism promotion program that will make up to $30.000.00 in funding available to non-profit groups that put on events and festivals that attract tourism to Astoria. The funds would come from hotel motel room taxes through the Promote Astoria Fund. Typically the Astoria/ Warrenton area chamber of commerce would get that funding but during a previous budget committee meeting there was discussion about making funding available to other organizations and it was discussed that there is no mechanisim in place for other groups to apply. The committee made of the city council and lay members of the public voted to create a fund and directe staff to come back with a application/qualification process. This is the only item on the budget committee agenda.
The Astoria City Council meeting follows at which the council is set to hear a presentation on the new Tsunami evacutation maps available through the Oregon Deprtment of Geology and Mineral Industries. A spokesman for DOGAMI is to prsent the local maps and explain how they can be used by the public. The council is also to decide on a contract for the Astoria Senior Center Project to hire an architecural firm to lay-out the design for the center rennovation. The Council will also consider a recommendation to terminate the pedetrian crossing flag program on 10th street after video studies indicated a less that 6% usage rate.
