Usually it's the Coast Guard that receives the grateful thanks of those who are at risk everyday working in the lower river and the ocean beyond. Wednesday Coast Guard Sector Columbia River passed out some kudos of their own, and awarded three Columbia River Bar Pilot employees with U.S. Coast Guard Public Service Certificates of Merit
during an award ceremony held at Sector Columbia River in Warrenton, Ore., Wednesday.
Capt. Bruce Jones, Sector Columbia River commander, presented the awards to Leroy Schlecht, George Ware, and Gerrald Tucker for rescuing a man stranded in the Columbia River, Dec. 29, 2012.
The three men were all working aboard a Columbia River Pilot vessel and immediately responded to a request for assistance from Coast Guard Sector Columbia River and the Astoria Police Dept. The men arrived on scene and rescued a man who was clinging to a steel tower, stranded in the Columbia River near Astoria.
