Jurors in Astoria, Ore., have convicted a Washington state man of attempted aggravated murder and related counts in a February 2012 encounter with police at a local motel.

Jurors on Monday convicted Yevgeniy Savinskiy of Washougal on two counts of attempted aggravated murder and two counts of first-degree attempted assault as well as felony attempt to elude and five counts of reckless endangerment.

The man was wounded when police went to the Lamplighter Motel to investigate a report of weaponry in his room.

Officer Joe Symonds testified at trial that he fired 15 to 20 rounds after Savinskiy aimed a firearm at him. The paper said authorities initially believed Savinskiy fired at the officer, but forensic evidence showed he didn't.

Savinskiy testified last week that he left his room with an AR-15 in hand intending to show it wasn't loaded. He said he didn't know the armed, black-clad people in the parking lot were police. (AP)
