With a sparkling new website, good attendance at general meetings, and a popular focus on the waterfront, the Astoria Regatta rises once again from the ashes under the direction of former city councilor Peter Roscoe who agreed several months ago to take the helm of the faltering organization as it's President. Roscoe will be on hand at the Astoria Council meeting tonight to present the latest update which includes the news that the Oregon Heritage Commission has named the Astoria Regatta as an Oregon Heritage Event joining just a handful of state festivals that have stood the test of time. Roscoe was a guest on the Monday edition of KAST Coastwatch with Tom Freel during which he explained the importance of the Heritage Event designation and when on to update listeners on the latest Regatta news. Roscoe plans to have a member of the Oregon Heritage Commission on hand at the city council meeting to help answer any questions the council may have regarding the designation and it's importance statewide.
In other business tonight the Astoria council will hear a presentation from Evans and Associates on the final design for the replacement of the Irving Avenue Bridge at 19th covering some details regarding the work and answering questions regarding the final design. The Mayor will present certificates to the winners of the 2013 Dr. Edward Harvey Preservation awards for their work to restore historic homes and businesses. The council will also hear about the work of the Astoria Rescue Mission in putting residents to work cleaning trash from city streets. Staff from the Astoria Library will be acknowledged for their actions recently in protecting a young patron from a man who was reportedly attempting to kidnap the young woman.
The council meets at 7pm Monday evening
