The days are long past when you could pitch that old can of paint in the garbage can, or just toss out unused pesticides, or other household chemicals. Safely disposing of that kind of waste requires special handling to ensure those toxic chemicals don't end up back in the environment.
So what do you do to responsibly dispose of those items like old art supplies, or fluorescent lights? The Clatsop County Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program is there to help to help you out and has scheduled a collection event on Saturday, May 4th from 9am to 1pm at the Warrenton location for Recology/Western Oregon Waste at 2320 SE 12th Place in the Airport Industrial Park. This event is only held once a year and is an opportunity to dispose of anything labeled "Poison", "Danger", "Toxic", "Flammable", "Combustible" "Corrosive", or "Ignitable".
This would include pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and paints, stains or solvents. They will also accept poisons, toxic cleaners, art/hobby chemicals, auto/boat fluids, antifreeze, rechargeable batteries, Fluorescent lights/bulbs with mercury Hg, and mercury thermometers. There is no charge to dispose of those items and for questions call 503-325-8500 and ask for the Household Hazardous Waste program.
There are some items that will NOT be accepted that would include medications, medical sharps, explosives, business or construction waste, and radioactive or asbestos materials.
