On March 28, 2013 at 2:45pm the Warrenton Police Department was sent to Coffenbury Lake at Fort Stevens State Park in reference to a possible stabbing. Officers were advised that a male subject had been injured by another male subject armed with a knife. The armed suspect fled the area and entered the surrounding brush and trees.
Besides the one on-duty officer from the WPD, deputies from the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office and a trooper from the Oregon State Police all responded to the area. Fort Stevens Rangers were also on the scene and providing assistance. Deputy Chance Moore was the first officer on the scene followed by Officer Alfonzo Fontana from the WPD, seven minutes after the initial dispatch. Deputy Moore quickly relayed a description of the 16-year old male suspect and started to establish a perimeter while Officer Fontana met with the 19-year old victim and several witnesses. It was learned that the victim and the suspect did not know each other and were strangers. It was also not clear as to why the disturbance started. As other officers arrived they were assigned to locations on the perimeter while waiting for CCSO K-9 "Pax" to arrive and start a search for the juvenile suspect.
Deputy Thomas Phillips and his K-9 "Pax" arrived on scene and started their search for the suspect at the location he was last seen entering the brush. Approximately 32-seconds after starting the search they located where the suspect was hiding and he was taken into custody without further incident. The pocket knife used in the assault was recovered from the suspect.
The victim suffered a minor cut to his left wrist and was treated at the scene by Medix and Warrenton Fire Department personnel. The 16-year old male suspect's foster parents were located and have been assisting with the investigation. Because the suspect is a juvenile the Clatsop County Juvenile Department was contacted and agreed to detain the suspect at the Young's Bay Detention Center in Warrenton. The suspect was transported to the detention center and released to detention center personnel. The Clatsop County Juvenile Department and Clatsop County DA will decide what charges will be filed and whether to release the juvenile suspect's name.
