Even an Oregon state legislator who is the chief sponsor of a bill to ban many semi-automatic firearms and high-capacity ammunition magazines says the measure is "pretty flawed" in its current form.

Democratic Rep. Mitch Greenlick of Portland says he doesn't think House Bill 3200 "is in play."

Greenlick tells The Oregonian ( that the bill as introduced goes too far in not only banning the sale of such weapons but in limiting each gun owner to continued possession of just one of the firearms.

He says he also disagrees with a provision that would allow state police to investigate gun owners who possess one of the weapons to make sure the guns are safely stored.

Last week, Senate Judiciary Chairman Floyd Prozanski of Eugene said he didn't plan to proceed with any bills to ban the sale of semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines.

House Judiciary Chairman Jeff Barker of Aloha also said he opposed such bans.
