On Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at 6:54pm deputies from the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office and officers from the Astoria Police Department responded to 34755 Hwy 101 Business in rural Astoria to a disturbance. It was originally reported that there were possibly gunshots or fireworks involved in the disturbance. A few moments later a male subject called 911 and reported that he had been stabbed during the disturbance. The report of gunshots was later discovered to be unfounded.
CCSO deputies and APD officers arrived on scene and learned that James J. Neikes, 56, from Astoria, OR., Darrell T. Fields, 49, transient from Astoria, OR, and Kimberly R. Dickson, 46, transient from Astoria, OR. were involved in the disturbance. Neikes had intervened trying to stop a domestic disturbance between Fields and Dickson and they turned their aggression towards Neikes. Neikes tried to flee and Fields stabbed him in the arm with a knife. Neikes received a 4 - 5 inch laceration to his upper left forearm and a small cut to a finger on his left hand. Neikes was treated and released at Columbia Memorial Hospital for his injuries.
Prior to police arriving Fields and Dickson had fled the scene on foot. After a brief search in the immediate area they were located hiding behind a nearby building and safely taken into custody. Dickson was released at the scene and Fields was lodged in the Clatsop County Correctional Facility for Assault in the 2nd degree.
The Clatsop County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that it is inherently dangerous to intervene during a domestic disturbance. The best approach is to call 911 from a safe location.
