Astoria was designated an official Coast Guard City in 2011 because of the long-standing relationship that exists between the city and the Coast Guard that has been mutually beneficial and supportive. This week the city marks that relationship with a specially designed monument placed near the downtown pier currently undergoing a complete rebuild to better accommodate the two Coast Guard ships that are home-ported there.
Astoria is one of only 14 in the country with this designation. On Thursday the city celebrates that strong relationship with the inveiling of a granite monument at the foot of the 17th street pier. In a letter to KAST News Astoria mayor Willis Van Dusen invites the public to witness the unveiling which will feature Coast Guard Captain of the Port Bruce Jones, State Senator Betsy Johnson and the city council. The mayor states "Astoria loves the Coast Guard! They are important members of our community..."
