Tuesday evening the Astoria City Council and the city Planning Commission will be meeting in a joint session to talk over the city's pedestrian issues and to lay out the groundrules related to future alternative energy facilties. The first item on the 5:30pm agenda is pedstrian safety. The Planning Commissioners do double duty as the Traffic Safety Committee and as tyhat body has been discussing various ways to address concerns over how safe it is to take a walk in Astoria while dealing with some problem crosswalks where accidents have occured. Representatives from the State Department of Transportation will be at the meeting along with members of the city police and public works departments. The second item is about solar energy. City manager Paul benoit writes that the city has been given a grant by the Oregon Land Conservation and Development Commission to draft code language assocated with solar and wind power facilities. Benoit said it was decided to focus on solar first and a respresentative of Energy Trust of Oregon will be on hand to talk about the future of solar energy in the state.
