Clatsop Economic Development Resources (CEDR) Director Kevin Leahy has just released details of an annual report on the activities of the organization that also includes an update on how the Clatsop Community College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has significantly increased it's activities over the past year.  Leahy is the Executive Director for both organizations and reports significant increases in participation by the business community.


SBDC provides local small business people with free and confidential counseling and the number of business people taking advantage of the service increased in 2012 by 50 clients which translates into an additional 548 hours of counseling service. The organization also works to connect businesses with capital formation which amounted to $375,735.00 compared with $191,500.00 the year before.  There were three new business starts last year compared to two the year before and the addition of 29.5 jobs as opposed to just five new jobs in 2011.  Leahy also reports that  there were 36 training events held last year compared with 20 the year before.  Attendance at those events doubled as locals took advantage of the opportunity. Leahy writes "Much of the credit goes to our great CEDR/SBDC staff which includes Dick Powell, lead business counselor, Mary Fryling (1/1-8/30) and Bernie Duerkop (10/1-) administrative assistants, our workshop instructors, and to our volunteer counselor Mike Knighten. I would also like to welcome and acknowledge our new Small Business Management Program Facilitator, Forrest Koch."

CEDR was active in a number of areas in 2012 including the formation of three new committees that Leahy states were intended  " be action-driven and results oriented"  Those committees include: " 1) Business Retention, Expansion and Recruitment Committee.

Priority business clusters: Hospitality/Tourism/Retail Trade, Craft Brewing/Distilling,    Historic Preservation, Forestry/Wood Products, Maritime, Health Care, Manufacturing and Entrepreneurs.

Targeting specific assistance and support strategies for each cluster. Razor focus on these "clusters".

Focus on growing existing businesses while recruiting new businesses to locate in Clatsop County.

2) CEDR Membership/Marketing Committee

Going after more private sector funding for CEDR. Reinforcing the importance of CEDR as the business "connector" for the entire county. Pacific Power and Clatsop Community Bank are current examples of this partnership, and will be expanded.

3)SBDC Advisory, Education and Workforce Training Committee

This committee creates linkage between programs offered with the SBDC, Clatsop Community College, our high schools, Tongue Point Job Corps Center, the State of Oregon, MTC works, Chambers of Commerce and other organizations.

Focus is on training, workshops, seminars and curriculum that enhances the skills of our workforce at all levels.

Major focus for 2013 is to "connect" all workforce training partners." according to Leahy.  For more information go to
