OHSU continues it's partnership with Astoria's Columbia Memorial Hospital in undertaking a new initiative on women's heart health as a major community issue. The long term study will try to answer some questions and demonstrate how a community can come together to prevent, treat and manage heart disease reducing the risk.
In a recent interview with KAST news OHSU's Dr. Mark O'Hollaren said that the level of cooperation between the City of Astoria, Columbia Memorial, and OHSU has been outstanding already providing a higher level of local service in areas like cancer care and treatment and most recently the addition of a new cardiology clinic at CMH headed up by OHSU's Dr. Diana Rinkevich. The new clinic is equipped with a full compliment of test gear and the means to interpret those tests on site. Dr. Rinkevich's focus is women's heart disease where, in some areas such as younger women there is far less research available. The Astoria Women's heart health initiative will help change that situation. Dr. O'Hallaren said that the best way to deliver health care to a community is to learn about broad aspects of the community directly from community members. He said the community raised the concern over heart health as a major area of focus and over time more community members have contributed to the conversation. The result of involvement by the schools, the community college, city government and many others presents a unique opportunity to bring those sectors together to solve an important health problem.
Clatsop County has the 3rd highest death rate due to heart disease in Oregon taking men and women together. Heart disease has become the #1 cause of death and disability among women in the U.S.
