A visit by a U.S. Senator and tonight's meeting of the Astoria City Council headline today's events.  Oregon's U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley is set to hold a town-hall meeting at the Columbia River Maritime Museum Kern Room this morning at 10:30am.  The Senator plans to give attendees a summary of his activities in Washington D.C. and his staff says he'll be looking for input from the public on issues of national importance.  The meeting is open to the public and museum admission is not necessary to attend.  Tonight at 7:00pm The Astoria City Council meets and will welcome new Fire Cheif Ted Ames who will be sworn in to take command of the Astoria Fire department.  Ames previously served as the Chief of the Warrenton Fire Department for over 15 years.  New Ward Two City Councilor Drew Herzig will be taking his position on the council tonight and Ward Four's Russ Warr will be sworn into a new four year term.  The council is set to consider authorizing staff to record liens on several properties in Astoria all owned by Mary Louise Flavel who, according to staff, has not responded to code violations or paid any of the fine levied by the city for her commercial and residential properties.  This could lead eventually to the city foreclosing on those long vacant buildings.
