U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliarist and former Executive Director of the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Jerry Ostermiller was awarded The Auxiliary Commendation Medal for outstanding achievement while serving as the Sector Columbia River Auxiliary Coordinator, Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.
Ostermiller served as the primary conduit between the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River staff and Auxiliarist forces comprising three Divisions, 23 Flotillas and 900 people, from Oct. 2010 to Dec. 2012.
According to the Coast Guard Ostermiller's achievements include:
Diligently representing Auxiliary interests by attending weekly Sector department head meetings and by briefing high-ranking officials including the District 13 Commander and DHS Undersecretary for Management, Rafael Borras.Ensuring that Sector priorities and expectations were promulgated to Auxiliarists, devotedly attending division and flotilla meetings.Made significant contributions to improving operational capabilities and safe mission execution, including the procurement of satellite radios for Division 11 Flotillas in Caldwell, Idaho, that substantially improved communication with the Sector Command Center located 500 miles away.
Ostermiller is a passionate advocate and loyal friend of the United States Coast Guard, and has truly earned the title of "Coast Guardsman". Ostermiller's dedication, judgment and devotion to duty are most heartily commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard.
