Gov. John Kitzhaber says he's calling the Oregon Legislature into session next week to pass a special tax break for large Oregon businesses with Nike mentioned as one of those that could otherwise leave the state instead of expanding in Oregon.
The Legislature is due to meet in its regular annual session beginning Jan. 14.
Kitzhaber said in a brief statement the special session will convene next Monday.
In a announcement Monday morning the Governor siad that while the athletic apparel giant had not threatened to leave Oregon he said that the company is being courted by other states that are percieved to be more tax favorable. The new legislation would extend to major businesses that provide family wage-level jobs. Kitzhaber said he would not extend a special break to businesses just wishing to add minimum wage employment opportunities.
