Clatsop County's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.6 percent in October, essentially the same as the previous month (7.7%), but lower than the year before (8.3%). It was lower than the statewide rate (8.6%) and about the same as the national rate (7.9%). Total employment in the county decreased by 699 from the previous month to 19,138. The estimated number of unemployed people rose by 161 to 1,484. The number of unemployed this October was 158 fewer than one year before and 167 fewer people were employed yielding a total drop in the labor force of 325.
Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment fell by 30 in October to 16,690. Seasonally adjusted figures compare expected changes with actual changes. A loss of 690 jobs is normal for the month, but the county shed 720. The private sector lost 780 jobs and government employment grew by 60. Food manufacturing trimmed 100 jobs; transportation, warehousing and utilities cut 80; and leisure and hospitality chopped 470. Local government education added 110 jobs and state governmentended 30.October's total nonfarm payroll employment was 100 more than its level last year. The private sector added 250 jobs while government employment dipped by 150.
