It's official – tobacco is prohibited at three Clatsop County properties in Astoria. Signs to that effect have been installed at the 800/820 Exchange St. offices, the Judge Guy Boyington Building at 857 Commercial St., and the public works complex at 1100 Olney Ave.
The new policy, approved by the Board of Commissioners in August, will eventually be extended to the remaining county properties, including the county courthouse and the Sheriff's Office/jail facility in Astoria and the parole and probation office and animal shelter in Warrenton.
The ban covers buildings and surrounding grounds, including parking lots. Violations would be classified as Class B violations and subject to fines of up to $300.
The tobacco policy is aimed at protecting the health of county employees and members of the public who do business at county facilities. It is also recognizes the traditional leading role of public health departments in reducing tobacco use. Tightening tobacco control policies has been shown to reduce its consumption and the impact of second-hand smoke.
