Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) officials are urging motorists to slow down and drive carefully on a short stretch of OR 202 between Astoria and Jewell (Milepost 18.8) where a landslide is impacting the roadway. ODOT has been monitoring the active landslide called the Buttercup Slide.
An emergency project that will stop the landslide is expected to begin later in November. ODOT geotech engineers have been drilling test holes and maintenance crews have been trying to keep both lanes driveable. However, the roadway impacted by the slide is comprised of mostly gravel and loose rock and is rough to drive on. The speed limit has been reduced to 35 miles per hour.
The emergency construction project will take 6 to 10 weeks to complete. During construction, one lane of travel will be open with flaggers controlling two way traffic.
Motorists should expect only minor delays.
