The Cowlitz County sheriff's office says the sheriff of neighboring Wahkiakum County fatally shot himself as his deputies arrived at his home.
Sheriff Mark Nelson said in a statement early Wednesday that two deputies went to Wahkiakum County Sheriff Jon Dearmore's home after his wife reported he was making suicidal statements.
Nelson says that as the deputies, both friends of Dearmore, approached the door to his workshop, Dearmore shot himself Tuesday afternoon.
The Cowlitz County sheriff's office says it is investigating the death after Wahkiakum County undersheriff Mark Howie asked for assistance.
Nelson says it appeared Dearmore may have been depressed over ongoing medical issues.
Dearmore had been sheriff for two years. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.
