The Astoria Fishermen survived a furious effort by the Seaside Seagulls and pulled out a dramatic 44-38 overtime win on Thursday night at John Warren Field. Senior RB Wyatt Wullger’s twisting 6 yard run in the first overtime gave the Fishermen their third straight victory as they stayed unbeaten in Cowapa League play at 3-0.

Senior QB Jeramy Poyer led the way for the Fishermen by throwing for two scores and running for three and intercepting a pass. Junior WR/DB Nick Strange caught two TD passes, had two interceptions and a fumble recovery as well for Astoria.

Sophomore RB Calvin Pollard scored three rushing TDs for the visiting Gulls in the back and forth affair.

The Fishermen had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but the Gulls blocked sophomore Michael Johansen’s 31 yard field goal attempt to force overtime.

In the first overtime Astoria’s defense stuffed the Gulls on three straight rushes inside the 1 yard line, setting the stage for Wullger to finish off the win on the ensuing possession.

The Fishermen host Banks next Friday night (Oct. 18th) at John Warren Field.
