In an effort to update the Recreational Trails Master Plan, the City of Astoria has asked the public for comments and recommendations over the past month. Approximately 200 or more people responded. Using this feedback, the City has completed a first draft list of future plans for the Trails Plan.
The recommendations will be presented to the public for additional comments at two upcoming events: October 6, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Coffee Girl at Pier 39; and October 7, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Sunday Market.
It has been a busy month for this project. The City hosted a booth at the Sunday Market and an evening event at Ft. George Brewery to listen to comments and recommendations from the public. Between the two events roughly 150 to 200 people attended. Additionally, 175 people responded to a survey that was distributed both online and in paper form throughout the community. Ten interviews were also conducted that targeted specific trail user groups within the community. “We were really happy with the level of participation and excitement we saw for this project from the public,” said Community Development Director Brett Estes.
Following the events at Coffee Girl on October 6 and at Sunday Market on October 7, the City will compile this feedback and create draft goals and plans for future trail system improvements in Astoria. The draft plan which addresses the public comments received to date will be submitted to the Parks Board, Planning Commission, and City Council for final consideration and potential adoption.
The City hopes the Plan will be completed this fall and adopted by the City Council over the winter. If adopted, the Parks Department will be responsible for acting on many of the recommendations in the Plan.
