This part of a Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge which began in 2008. Tides eventually will fill into the 621 acres in the southern area of the Willapa Bay.
Other federal wildlife refuges in SW Washington completing their own conservation plans. The Willapa project among the most controversial. Funding halted temporarily by U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler.
Willapa National Wildlife Refuge managers hope the plan will help salmon reach good spawning habitat and help bird populations. The changes also providing opportunities for anglers and hunters.
